Our Supplement for the month of April is Probiotics

Probiotics are one of the most important supplements that we sell here at WOW.

Why and what are they?

Probiotics are a mixture of bacteria that helps to keep the environment in a patient’s stomach healthy. The body is constantly trying to balance out the good and bad bacteria within it. Probiotics can be a great way – along with a healthy diet –  to keep everything well balanced.

Some of the common positive side effects of a probiotic are:

  • better food digestion

  • less irritable bowl-like symptoms

  • improved oral health

According to Web MD,

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for you, especially your digestive system.”

How do probiotics work?

The main job of probiotics, (good bacteria), is to keep a healthy balance in your body.

Probiotics keep your body in balance. When you get sick, bad bacteria has entered your body and quickly increases in number. This knocks your body out of balance and you get symptoms that may include irritable bowel, bad breath, fever, etc.

Good bacteria (probiotics) work to fight off the bad bacteria and restore the balance within your body, making you feel better.

Good bacteria keep you healthy by supporting your immune function and controlling inflammation. Good bacteria can also:

  • Help you digest food.
  • Keep bad bacteria from getting out of control and making you sick.
  • Create vitamins.
  • Support the cells that line your gut to prevent bad bacteria that you may have consumed (from food, dirty surfaces, or drinks) from entering your bloodstream.
  • Break down and absorb medications well.

This balancing act happens in your body naturally all of the time. Your immune system makes sure of it.

You don’t have to take probiotic supplements to make it happen, but it certainly does help. Germs and viruses are everywhere (as we are made acutely aware of this past year).

According to the National Institute of Health:

Most importantly, modulation of the immune system is one of the most plausible mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of probiotics on human health. Probiotics have been found to enhance the innate immunity and modulate pathogen-induced inflammation via toll-like receptor-regulated signaling pathways [] .

Good bacteria is just a natural part of your body.

Eating a well-balanced diet rich in fiber every day helps to keep the number of good bacteria at proper levels.
