December and the whole holiday season is synonymous with giving.
But what about receiving? Most of us feel uncomfortable about receiving. Whether it is a lavish gift, an act of kindness or even a compliment, most of us have difficulty receiving. Is it guilt, a feeling of unworthiness, a concern that we will be beholding or just a message we were taught as children that it is “ better to give than to receive”?
Whatever the reason for our hesitation to receive, we are doing ourselves and others a great disservice. We diminish the amount of joy, love and abundance that we let into our own lives. We also deny others the joy of sharing and giving. Maybe it is best to generously give and joyfully receive.
Every month in the office we post a question or inspiring quote, this month it is a quote by Steve Jobs: “Leave a dent in the universe”.
That has been my goal since high school. I worked at a camp for inner city kids and they had so many blocks in their way it seemed they may never reach their full potential. So I became a social worker for Franklin County Children’s Services in the abuse unit. Frustrating work to say the least but while there I fell down the steps and experienced sciatica. 8 months of pain (my menstrual period also stopped), 4 MDs and many drugs later I found my way to a chiropractor. I was skeptical but desperate. Within 3 weeks the sciatic pain was gone and my period returned to normal (except no horrible cramps). But the amazing thing to me was the daily migraines that had tortured me since childhood were gone.
This was my miracle. I woke up one morning and said to my husband “I have to be a chiropractor,” He said “Do you want to be?”
I didn’t even know if it was what I wanted but I knew this was my path to help people reach their full potential and “Make a dent in the universe”.
