Everyone calls this season “Cold and Flu” season.
Although we are inside more, viruses don’t suddenly appear or become more virulent in the fall and winter. It is more likely that our immune systems have a harder time fighting off infections at this time of year; mainly because our Vitamin D levels are at their lowest. Vitamin D is produced when your skin is exposed to ultra-violet-B radiation from the sun. Our lack of sun and less time outdoors is a recipe for Vitamin D depletion.
There may be other consequences to D deficiency. Low levels of Vitamin D are linked to increased rates of heart attacks, stroke, Type I diabetes, asthma and some types of cancer, fractures and MS. Most adults require about 5,000 IU per day to maintain good health and avoid deficiencies. However some folks are so depleted they may need more.
