The New England Journal of Medicine recently published some shocking statistics.
75,000 hospital patients die yearly from health care related infections; that is about 200 deaths per day. This is 15 times the number of soldiers killed in Iraq since 2003.
The horrific part is that these infections are preventable. Since hospitals have been given financial incentives and forced to publicly report their infection rates, they have actually improved to this rate. So when bribed or shamed hospitals do their job.
The take away from this information is we must stay healthy and out of the hospital.
