What is a Chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is a procedure performed by chiropractors to address misalignments or dysfunctions in the spine or other joints of the body. The goal of a chiropractic adjustment is to restore proper alignment, mobility, and function to the affected joint, thereby alleviating pain, improving range of motion, and promoting overall health. See Mayo Clinic, “What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?”
What is the Chiropractic doctor looking for?
Chiropractors palpate the joints of the body looking for restriction and abnormal movement patterns and not just in the spine! These restrictions can be caused by tight muscles, acute and chronic injuries, and various medical conditions.
What is a chiropractic adjustment actually doing?
An adjustment is a strategic application of the doctor’s hands or a small instrument over an area of restricted movement. These high velocity, low amplitude movements are allowing better joint mobility and physical function. An adjustment relieves pressure the body has put on nerves and discs. This is accomplished partially by the use of a “drop table” in our office.
How does a chiropractic adjustment affect your body?
The adjustments your chiropractor makes reset the nervous system allowing the body to work more effectively. The brain to body conversation is more fluid. Adjustments improve posture, relieve tension and pain, and increase blood flow, among a ton of other things!
You received an adjustment; now how do you get it to hold?
Getting an adjustment to hold all starts with your daily routine:
- get good sleep
- drink plenty of water
- exercise
Other ways to support the adjustment:
- watch your posture
- use ergonomic furniture
- avoid awkward movements
- take breaks
- get a massage
